It played great for the time. I played the heck out of this back in the day. If you use a joystick and "stir" it to generate a bunch of different punches you'll get far. There was a bug in the original, Smokin' Joe Blow has a much harder punch then his bar graph shows, I think it's a modulo error. Head to head he can almost beat the champ! Mamutt 1 point DOS version. The various computer-played opponents act different. The motivation is high to play on and on. I played the whole career of my boxer on one day, I fought almost 50 fights and brought him up to Rank 7 - he got too old then and so his career was over.
He was almost unbeatable - perfect in all attributes. Too sad that he never got the chance to fight against the champion Well, there will be a next career. The game is highly configurable and you can even fight in 1st person-view.
A great game where you can see the effort of the programmers to build in as much realistic elements as possible while providing a maximum of fun. While the character models look great and feature fluid animation, there isn't much detail given to the actual boxers. Fighting in 4D Boxing is relatively simple thanks to a decent control set up. You can initiate headshots, left or right uppercuts, or basic jab attacks. Players can even do a bolo punch if they're feeling up to it, as well as taunt opponents. Thanks in part to the landmark perspective, a first for a boxing game, 4D Boxing is a knockout for its time.
The graphics engine allows for multiple camera angles and viewpoints, and considerably detailed visuals. These required more advanced hardware than was common at the time, but a stick-figure mode was included as a compromise. The moves on offer include all the uppercuts and hooks of a real fight, and the players are designed to move realistically to implement them.
You progress through the game by taking on a succession of increasingly difficult fighters, and get to train your boxer in between. Advanced action replays are included as well, so you can review all that happened. It's because of some fun and interesting features. First of all, you can create your boxer. This can be fun, as they look so horrible; you can get a kick just out of creating a short fat boxer with pink underpants.
Still, if you want to play this game seriously, your boxer's characteristics will be very important during the later stages of the game. Another fun feature is that you can improve your boxer's abilities after each match. The point of the game is to become the champion.
